What Type is the Best Protein Powder?

Best Protein Powder Type

When you’re new to the dieting and or bodybuilding worlds, the number of products that are available that are meant to help you to achieve faster and easier results can seem overwhelming. After all, no product is going to advertise that it is almost as good as the competition. They all claim to be the very best and that you will be able to achieve the fastest and easiest results if you use them. Protein powders are no different.

Why Look for the Best Protein Powder?

You may want to add a protein powder to your smoothie in order to be able to enhance the impact of your efforts, but when you step up to the shelf or shop around online, it doesn’t take long to find out that there are dozens – if not hundreds – of different options that are all readily available for you. Since they all claim to be the best, it can be very challenging to know which one to believe.

According to Christine Avanti, R.D., a certified nutritionist and the author of a book called “Skinny Chicks Eat Real Food”, the best protein powders are the ones that are made from egg whites. Avanti explained that this type is comparable to “real food” and therefore produces the best and healthiest results. In case you were wondering, no, they don’t taste like eggs, so they won’t taint the flavor of your favorite smoothie.

Finding the Type You Prefer

Again, there are a number of different options within the egg white protein powder category, so there are still some decisions to be made.

Overall, you can look for the one that is on sale or that is offered at the best price, but at the same time, it is still a good idea to focus on the brands that use only 100 percent natural ingredients and that use pure egg whites. The reason is that egg whites are nearly a perfect form of protein, according to Avanti, though others do disagree. For that reason, they will be able to provide your body with substantial benefit as a supplement.

Best Protein Powder Options for Vegans or Vegetarians

If you are vegan or vegetarian and do not eat eggs, there are some good alternatives. According to Avanti, hemp protein powder is one of the best options out there for those who do not eat eggs.

Signs a Product is Not for You

Overall, look for protein powders that have a larger number of grams of protein that any other nutrient that is listed on their labels and steer clear of those that contain artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners.

You may be shocked at how many products advertise themselves as the best protein powders, only to come with a massive dose of sugar, artificial flavors and sweeteners, and calories.  In some cases, you’d be better off eating a candy bar that contains nuts than to drink one of the shakes made with those supplement products.

Of course, it’s always a good idea to know if you actually need the supplementation in the first place.  Before making your purchase, spend a couple of weeks tracking your food using an app that will give you a tally of your protein intake per meal and per day.  This will help you to know if your macronutrient balance needs help. You may find that you are already getting more than enough protein from your meals every day as many Americans already do.
