Primary Obesity Surgery Endolumenal, also known as POSE, is an endoscopic procedure through which you can lose weight. If you want to lose weight through surgery because your health is at risk, the POSE procedure could work for you. However, this procedure is different than surgery because it does not require incisions to be made anywhere and the whole process is safe. It is considered a much safer alternative to bariatric surgery.
The POSE procedure is carried out by inserting an endoscope via the mouth. The endoscope is then used by the surgeon to create folds in the stomach, which reduces the capacity and size of the stomach. This way, patients are able to eat less and yet feel full. Moreover, because the surgery is done via mouth insertion, there are no scars or marks on the skin around the abdomen and belly, unlike other forms of bariatric surgery.
It is a relatively new procedure so there is no proper info available on exactly how much weight you will lose. But patients have reported losing 30% of body fat within 3 to 12 months.
There are some side effects to the procedure, but nothing that will interfere too much.
Patients may feel nausea or sore throat. Also, they have to avoid solid foods for at least two days after the procedure. You can resume your normal routine after a few days. Your bowel movements will change after the surgery initially because of the change in diet but they will be back to normal in no time. Drink plenty of fluids but do not drink and eat at the same time. Although no surgery is completely risk free, the POSE procedure is relatively safe compared to other bariatric surgeries.
You cannot drink sodas and alcohol after the surgery because of their high calorie content. Instead consume low fat milk and herbal teas. You also have to avoid food with high carbs and fat. Instead, consume healthy alternatives like beans and veggies. Take a daily mineral and vitamin supplement. From the 5th week you can start consuming solid foods, but gradually.
Consume foods high in fiber. Once you resume your normal diet, pay attention to any signal that your body gives that you are full. If you don’t then you might feel nauseous. What is important for you to be a suitable candidate for this procedure is that you are committed to following the diet and exercise programs recommended after the procedure.
